Bear Creek Prescribed Fire: Reduce Wildfire Risk/Create Better Habitat

We know… it feels like we’ve been talking about Red Flag Warnings and high fire danger a lot lately. Trust us, we’d love a new topic too. There’s a reason for that.

This same dry, windy weather that’s driving those Red Flag days is also keeping us from doing something that would actually help reduce wildfire risk in the long run: prescribed fire at Bear Creek Lake Park. We have a burn plan in place through the end of April. But with current fire restrictions in Jefferson County- and conditions staying warm and dry- it’s unlikely we’ll be able to burn.

Prescribed fire can help reduce invasive species,  improve habitat, and lower wildfire risk. But only when conditions are right. Right now, they’re not. Not even close. In the video: watch how prescribed fire helps restore balance in the park- when conditions allow.
